The city is named after Civil War Union Major General Jesse L. A drive to historic Virginia City will take 36 minutes (26 miles). In the summer, it takes 30 minutes to drive from Reno to the capital of Nevada, Carson City (32 miles) and 45 minutes to Lake Tahoe (37 miles).
Amtrak provides daily passenger service to Reno as far east as Chicago and as far west as Oakland. A flight takes 75 minutes from Las Vegas. Reno is approximately a 7 hour car drive from Las Vegas (438 miles). It is known as “The Biggest Little City in the World”. Reno is located in the northwest portion of the state of Nevada, 14 miles from the California border.
